Pilates classes

Improve your Strength & Flexibility

This class is a series of exercises to increase strength, tone and flexibility in the body. Following the traditional Mat Pilates exercises developed by Joseph Pilates from his machine programme for the Reformer, Cadillac, etc, these movements will work all the major joints and muscle groups, as well as the more subtle ones you didn’t know you had! The session begins with opening stretches and then we move into the exercises themselves where modifications are given so everyone is able to participate at their level. We finish the class with twists and stretches focussed on the areas of the body we have used. Instructions for the Pilates Breath are given throughout.

You will need a mat, blanket or towel to lie on.

Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement e.g. a t-shirt and leggings/tracksuit bottoms.

The 6 Pilates Principles

Vicky will highlight The 6 Pilates Principles throughout the session to focus on aspects of each exercise and improve your overall awareness of your body’s movements. This will help increase strength, flexibility and can help to avoid injury and ease aches and pains.

All movements originate from the centre of the body – commonly in classes we refer to ‘the core’.

Essential to the quality of every movement – quality, not quantity!

Concentration
Co-ordinating mind and body in movement – having full body awareness.

Precision
Moving, directing and placing the body and its parts – builds on the Concentration Principle.

Breathing
Thorough and purposeful inhalation and exhalation – in through the nose, and out through the mouth.

Flowing Movement
Smooth and even movement – no jerky, quick or incomplete movements.
